Dear Parents/Guardians,
As this academic year comes to a close, there is an opportunity over the summer to reflect on 5th Year and engage in worthwhile career research and planning for whatever a student might consider doing on leaving school this time next year. There is such a range of opportunities and educational route options available, and all require thought and consideration. Students can apply for a variety of application systems, and are not limited to select just one. There are supplementary schemes to support applications in areas like financial, mental health, health etc. There is much to research and contemplate.
I spoke to our students last September and advised that 5th Year should be a year of career exploration and career self-evaluation, and 6th Year is a year for decision making and application. I am delighted to see that many of our 5th Years have taken this advice on board. Unfortunately, a number of 5th Year students showed casual attendance on Friday afternoons this year, which has meant limited access to their Career Class and information. Commencing 6th Year without some career self-exploration and research completed, leads to overwhelming levels of stress which impedes study and progress. The more engaged a student can be over the summer months, with thorough research and thinking about options for after 6th Year, the more manageable her Leaving Cert year will be.
Please find a summary pdf attached designed to guide and inform the year ahead.
Looking forward to working with you and our 6th Years next September.
Regards,
N Gallagher, Guidance Counsellor
