On the 23rd of November St. Angela’s inaugurated a year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary with a wonderful liturgy held in St. Mary’s Church Pope’s Quay. All members of the school community came together to produce an event filled with pageantry, nostalgia and reverence attended by many invited guests, including members of the Ursuline Order, past pupils and retired teachers. The Transition Year students performed a number of liturgical dances followed by a procession illustrating the long and varied history of the school. Colourful banners prepared by the Art Department depicted scenes from St. Angela’s through the decades.
The event culminated in a celebration of the Eucharist, presided over by Fr Cormac Breathnach of the SMA Fathers. In his homily he urged the students to continue to uphold the proud ethos of the Ursuline Order. Throughout the service the orchestra, directed by Ms McDonaldy, and the school choir greatly added to the atmosphere and sense of occasion. As part of the ceremony the school formally passed on to the Le Chéile Trust, represented by Ms Eilis Humphries. More information about the Trust can be found at www.lecheiletrust.ie.
The ceremony was followed by a reception hosted by fifth year students in the High School. Once again, this building, which is iconic to many St. Angela’s past pupils, rang with the sound of laughter and nostalgia, as guests perused the displays on show around the room. The work of the Heritage group, the displays captured images and oral testimony from students long gone and were an apt reminder of how much St. Angela’s has to celebrate.
There will be many more opportunities to celebrate this significant milestone in the school’s history over the coming year. Keep an eye on the website to stay up to date on future events.!
