On the 13th of December Ms. O’ Sullivan’s 1st year science class went to UCC to learn about DNA. When we arrived we were given a lab coat and goggles. They showed us a PowerPoint about DNA and how it looks like a double helix.[nggallery id=3]
After the PowerPoint we extracted DNA from a strawberry. We mashed up a strawberry in a zip lock bag until it turned to a pulp, then we added 10mls of salty water to the pulp to help get rid of some of the proteins. We filtered the strawberry mixture using filter paper. Then we added a squirt of soap. This helped to get rid of any proteins or sugars so we would be left with just the DNA. We poured in some alcohol. The strawberry mixture sunk to the bottom while the alcohol stayed on the top. After a few seconds, a white fluid started rising up from the strawberry mixture. This was the DNA from the strawberry. We really enjoyed going to UCC and had a great time.
