In February 2012, eight students and one teacher from St Angela’s Transition year group travelled to India to work with the HOPE Foundation’s projects in Kolkata. In order to be selected, the students had to submit a letter of application and undergo an interview. After selection they had the daunting task of raising €3,100 each for the HOPE Foundation. The money raised was used to fund projects working with the street and slum children of Kolkata. Over 250,000 children are forced to live on the streets of Kolkata and around five million people exist in horrific conditions in slums. The students travelled to visit these children, work with the projects and bear witness to these horrific conditions. Each day was spent visiting the variety of projects HOPE runs, from Medical Centres, to Schools, to Homework clubs, to Crèches, to Homes for the homeless. The girls – Rebecca O’Sullivan, Lisa Porter, Alice Maguire, Niamh O’Leary McNeice, Ellen Hayes, Catriona Landers, Clodgah Quilter and Liadh Conroy – described the experience as “life changing”. It was the best of times and the worst of times. Read more about their experiences from the girls themselves, by clicking below.
