We were delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy, to St Angela’s College today. Mr Curran welcomed Cllr. McCarthy when he arrived. At the assembly of students in the PE Hall Phoebe Twomey, our Deputy Head Girl, welcomed Cllr. McCarthy as gaeilge first, and then our Head Girl, Amy Barry, spoke. Amy also presented Cllr. McCarthy with a gift in appreciation of his visit.
The Lord Mayor then spoke to all of our Junior students and a number of teachers. He told all gathered that he was a storyteller, and a collector of stories. He told us about his career giving walking tours of Cork City, writing History books on Cork, regional and Irish history, and writing his weekly local history column, ‘Our City Our Town’, published in the Cork Independent. His love of Cork City was very evident in how he spoke.
Our girls were full of questions about the role of the Lord Mayor, the chain of office, and what made Cllr. McCarthy want to become Lord Mayor. We sincerely appreciated all the detailed answers that the girls received. Cllr. McCarthy told our students that their stories are only beginning, and it’s up to them to make sure that they write the best life story possible, by living life to the full, and maintaining and building connections.
We would sincerely like to thank the Lord Mayor for visiting us today and for his encouragement of our girls to get interested and active in areas such as politics and climate change. We send every best wish to the Lord Mayor for his term in office.
