We were honoured and excited to have a school visit last Friday, March 4th from Dr Linda Doyle, a hugely inspirational past pupil and current Provost of Trinity College Dublin. Dr Doyle graduated from St Angela’s College, and continued on to UCC to study Electrical Engineering. She then progressed on to Trinity where she received a Masters and PhD and which enabled her to become a Professor of Engineering and the Arts. Promoting women in Engineering & Computer Science is an additional role that Dr Doyle has undertaken. Another of Dr Doyle’s many accomplishments is the success of Connect – a Science Foundation Ireland National Research Centre for future networks and communications, of which she was a Founding Director. We listened to, admired and aspired to some of her core values such as Education, Research, Creativity, Equality, Diversity, Informed Decision-making and STEAM – which place particular emphasis on including the Arts in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
Elected to the position of Provost, this is a role that has been held by men only for the past 429 years. Therefore, her visit was most fitting on the eve of International Women’s Day in St Angela’s College as this year’s theme is Breaking the Bias.
She visited a 2nd Year Technical Graphics class, addressed students and the 6th Year Student Council conducted a formal interview with her as part of their IWD initiative. The students greeted her and spoke of their various initiatives and projects such as the TY’s YSI group which highlights and addresses the issue of Direct Provision, and the Student Council recounting initiatives such as fundraising for SVP, International Women’s Day events and the Know Your Flow project. Teachers and Management alike were truly in awe of the calibre, conduct, delivery of speeches and general representation by our students.
