Welcome to International Women’s Week 2023 in St Angela’s College. The aim of our events this week is to celebrate our students and staff and to raise awareness around issues such as discrimination, bias and stereotypes. This year’s international theme is #Embrace Equity. Many Subject Departments have created projects and posters to give prominence to the achievements of women in their field and others to highlight important messages around sexism and inequality. Teachers have given class time to discussion around IWD and Equity – how can we work to create a world where people receive what they need.
The 46 members of the Student Council have organised various events throughout the week such as an IWD Treasure Hunt, an interview with two people from Afghanistan who have refugee status in Ireland, a Time Capsule project for 1st Years, a purple Own Clothes’ Day on Wednesday the 8th in aid of a Children’s Orphanage and Education Centre in Afghanistan, purple ribbons for all students to represent unity, strength, dignity and grace, intercom announcements highlighting students’ participation and success, a tree planting ceremony and a Purple Cake Sale in aid of Cork’s Sexual Violence Centre. The Council’s chosen word this year is Neart – Strength.
We wish all members of our school community a very Happy International Women’s Day!
