Welcome to the Reading Revolution!! We consist of Fourth years and our aim is to increase the literacy around the school. We are trying to achieve our goals by carrying out various activities to enhance the standard of English for every student attending St Angela’s College. We have been split into different groups such as class photographers, bloggers, public relations managers, project managers, notice board monitors and Red/Read Wall monitors. We will update our blog every week to inform our readers on our progress.
Weekly update
This week the Reading Revolution class continued organising our upcoming events by carefully selecting our dates and times. Follow us on Twitter @sacreadingrev to be updated on the details of when and where. First 100 followers get a lollipop!
Our class began working on our notice boards in the halls by stripping them and they have started re-decorating them and the notice board co-ordinators will be updating these. Look out for these notice boards when walking around the school halls when going to classes.
Finally, a reminder to bring in any spare books during the week for our Book Drive. Leave the book/books in the box in reception with your name and class on them and in return you will be given a cookie! This event is being named ‘Bookies For Cookies’. This will be taking place all week long.
Reading Revolution!
This years Reading Revolution class have started a blog to let all students and teachers know about what we are doing and have done in our recent weeks and weeks to come. It will be updated once or twice a week with upcoming events and activities. It will also include photos from some of our activities that will take place.
Our Reading Revolution group is working on a set of goals we have made out together to have completed by the end of fourth year. Our aims this year are to increase the supply of popular books and usage of the library by 10%. We aim to win the ‘Wellread’ School Award. We want to also promote reading through organised activities and also promote oral literacy through guest speakers coming into classes.
We have already begun working to promote reading and literacy through organised activities. Our Reading Revolution class recently held a Spelling Bee for 1st years and it has so far gone well. The Spelling Bee final is coming soon! Everyone who took part got a certificate with their names on it for participating in our event. We would like to thank all those who took part.
Since we have came back from our mid-term break we have already planned many more activities and events that should be taking place very soon. Watch this space!
2015 World Book Day
On the 6th of March 2015, St Angela’s college celebrated World Book Day for the first time. As part of the reading revolution our class organised the whole day. We had very little time to do so as fourth year is so busy. For the day we had Vibes & Scribes come visit our school to sell books and to advertise the book shop as it is one of the closest book shops near our school. We also got Supervalu to make cupcakes so everyone in the school brought in their favourite book and wrote a sentence on why it was their favourite book and they then received a free cupcake! We had to book hunts for 1st years and 4th years on the day. There was fantastic competitions throughout the day, all of the students brought great enthusiasm to the day by dressing up as their favourite book character and taking part in all the fun throughout the day!! We finished the day off by having everyone to ‘D.E.A.R’ (Drop everything and read) this was a lovely way to end the day. Everyone had great reports and the 3rd years are even excited for next year’s reading revolution group to celebrate World Book Day 2016!!
Before Christmas the Reading Revolution had a book sale. Students from every year donated books. We split into different groups to organize the book sale. Some people were on the set up committee, others on the clean-up committee and the rest had various jobs like categorising the books and selling them. We received over 100 books from all the students and the teachers. We put up posters around the school to promote the book sale and then organised for each class to come down to the book sale at a set time on the Friday afternoon. The book sale was held in the reception of the school. Everyone showed great interest and most people bought books. The whole school showed their support and we, the Reading Revolution, felt it really promoted literacy in the school. It was a great success!

Today, Annalisa Doherty organised for her sister Bianca Doherty to come and speak to the Reading Revolution class about World Book Night on April 23rd 2014. This event is organised to promote reading and to improve literacy around the world. Bianca applied to be a “giver”, which means she has to distribute 20 books to people who don’t read. To apply for the role of being a “giver” you must be over 16. She came to raise awareness about World Book Night 2014 and was very successful as now many people are considering registering!

Class photographers: The class photographers, April and Silja, went to the Red Walls to take pictures while Amy and Niamh painted them; they did this to document the progress of the Red Walls. They also took photographs of all the notice boards too.
Public relations managers: Alison, Annalisa and Niamh wrote a letter asking businesses, big and small, to help us by donating money to get new books for our library. Annalisa brought it down town on Saturday to hand in the letters to the businesses personally.
Project managers: Saordha and Rachel went around and collected the First Year’s bookmarks for the bookmark competition. The bookmark competition was organised to get the first years to design and create original bookmarks to interest them in reading and involve them in school.
Notice board managers: Nicole, Lydia, Lynn, Orla, Lorraine, Niamh and Emily designed the notice boards designated to them on each floor. They had to come up with interesting and eye catching ideas to catch people attention. The third and fourth year’s board, on the Ursula floor, is now displaying information about authors.
